Premier League football will be played on Boxing Day again this year after last season’s fixture scheduling caused outrage among supporters.

One of English football’s greatest traditions was disrupted in the 2025/26 campaign because of a combination of European fixtures and the way the calendar fell.

In the coming season, Boxing Day falls on a Saturday – which means a return to the usual Christmas schedule for top-flight football.

Perhaps the pick of the fixtures on December 26 will be Newcastle United’s home match against Manchester City. Arsenal’s London derby at Crystal Palace will also take place on Boxing Day, as will a meeting between Frank Lampard’s Coventry City and his former club Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s title defence will begin with a Friday night match at home to newly promoted Coventry on August 21.

That same weekend, on Sunday, Andoni Iraola will take charge of his first league match with Liverpool when his team travel to Newcastle United. That could be an interesting occasion for new winger Victor Muñoz, who has this week signed for Liverpool after snubbing Newcastle at the last moment.

On the Monday, Xabi Alonso, the new Chelsea manager, will begin his Premier League coaching career with a London derby against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

    Manchester City’s difficult winter

Manchester City’s first season after the Pep Guardiola era will include a treacherous run of fixtures during the crucial Christmas and New Year period.

Between Boxing Day and January 2, City will play away matches against Newcastle and Everton and also host Tottenham Hotspur.

    Spurs face tricky run-in

The fixture list has presented Spurs with a seemingly extremely challenging final few weeks of the campaign.

In their five fixtures in May, Roberto De Zerbi’s side will face Arsenal away in a late-season north London derby, Chelsea at home, Coventry away, Manchester United at home and Aston Villa away.

    Arsenal’s tough start

An opening home match against newly promoted Coventry could represent a gentle start to Arsenal’s title defence but the first few weeks of the campaign will not be straightforward for Mikel Arteta’s team as they negotiate some difficult away trips. After Coventry, the champions face Aston Villa (a), Chelsea (h), Sunderland (a) and Brighton (a).

    Liverpool’s autumn challenge

The first defining period of Iraola’s debut campaign at Anfield could come in October/November. In the space of four games, Liverpool will play Arsenal (h), Crystal Palace (a), Manchester United (h) and Everton (a).

    United meet the ‘minnows’

Manchester United’s opening two fixtures are both against promoted teams. Their season begins with an away match at Hull City, before then playing a home game against Ipswich Town.

It soon becomes much more tricky for Michael Carrick: in the fourth round of fixtures, United host City in the Manchester derby.

    Arsenal’s key fixtures

Arsenal’s title defence begins at home to Coventry and will be given a stern challenge in the first few weeks of the season, travelling to Villa Park, a notoriously tough destination, followed by London rivals Chelsea. The calendar does get kinder, with Arsenal not leaving the capital from the end of November until mid-January – the perfect opportunity to get into a title-winning groove.

The run-in is also kind to Arteta’s men. In Arsenal’s last five matches, they do not play a team who finished in the top seven of the Premier League last season, ending their campaign with a home match against Brighton. If they can navigate a tricky start, Arteta and his players will be confident of consecutive titles come April.

    Chelsea’s key fixtures

Alonso will kick his Chelsea career off with a short trip to west London rivals Fulham, a fixture which they lost last season. It should be a breezy start to life for the Spaniard, with Arsenal being the only one of last season’s top five that Chelsea play in their first eight fixtures, rounding this off with the visit of Spurs to Stamford Bridge.

Nevertheless, Alonso’s toughest period of the season looks to be the run-in, when Chelsea face Manchester City, Liverpool and Spurs, the latter two away from home. If he can get through this unscathed, then the last three matches for Chelsea look easier, well primed for a final push to get back into the Champions League, and possibly more.

    Liverpool’s key fixtures

Iraola will travel to St James’ Park for his first match in charge, a fixture which has proved tasty in recent seasons. His first game in front of an Anfield crowd is against Nottingham Forest, who embarrassed Liverpool 3-0 last season – he will be hoping for a happier result.

The toughest period of the season for Liverpool looks to be at the end of January, with back-to-back games against rivals Manchester United and Everton both coming after Champions League fixtures midweek. Failure to secure qualification to the latter rounds by this point could derail their season, with a trip to the Emirates being the reward at the end of this demanding period.

    Manchester City’s key fixtures

A kind first three fixtures gives way to a tough five after that, with City, and their new manager, facing four of last season’s top six before the end of October. Enzo Maresca (if he is the new manager) will also be looking at the end of January at a tricky period, having to travel to Tottenham – never an easy fixture for City – as well as playing Arsenal and Newcastle at the Etihad, with the former coming after the final match of the Champions League group phase.

In terms of kinder runs of fixtures, it is hard to pick one out, but the festive period looks a bit nicer for City, who do not face any of last season’s top eight between the start of December and mid-January, although this does include matches against Chelsea and Tottenham, who finished 10th and 17th respectively last campaign.

    Manchester United’s key fixtures

A first season back in the Champions League for Manchester United for three years begins nicely with two of the promoted trio in the first three matches. Carrick will also have the perfect chance to kick-start his first full season with home matches against Manchester City and Tottenham within his first six matches, fixtures which both ended in victories last campaign.

The run-in is also kind, with an away trip to Spurs being the only one of the “big six” United will face after March. Matches against Liverpool bookend the festive period, which also features trips to the Emirates and St James’ Park.

    Tottenham Hotspur’s key fixtures

De Zerbi will have to wait until December for his first taste of the north London derby, but he will have to get through a tricky first few fixtures first, with none of Spurs’ first three opponents bringing victories last season. However, their run-in is arguably more difficult, with matches against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all coming before a final=day trip to Villa Park, which Spurs fans will be hoping will be without the nail-biting tension of the final day of their last campaign.

The end of December until the start of February looks like the kindest period of the season for De Zerbi’s men, with a trip to the Etihad being the only time that Spurs will face one of last season’s top five, until another match against City in mid-February.
